If you see a new light illuminated on your dash that wasn’t there before, you have likely asked, “What does the light on my dashboard mean?” Each light has a different meaning, so it is important to know what these symbols signal. Greenway Kia of the Shoals has provided a quick guide to dashboard warning lights below for our friends in the Florence area.
Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light – No, you won’t be getting a genie and three wishes; that’s your oil lamp. An illuminated oil pressure light could signal that your vehicle doesn’t have enough oil or that the oil is not circulating as it should.
Malfunction Indicator Light – Also known as the check engine light, this light is a sign from the car’s engine computer that something is wrong.
Electric Parking Brake (EPB) Warning Light – This simply lets you know that your parking brake is engaged.
Seat Belt Warning Light – This light is designed to remind passengers to wear their seatbelts. The warning chime may also sound if the driver’s seatbelt is not fastened.
Lights ON Indicator Light – This light will illuminate when your vehicle’s headlights are on.
High Beam Indicator Light – This light will illuminate when your vehicle’s brights are on.
Front Fog Light Indicator Light – This light will illuminate when your vehicle’s fog lights are on.
Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist – Pedestrian (FCA-Ped) Warning Light – This light shows that this feature, which warns the driver and brakes if necessary if a pedestrian is detected in the vehicle’s path, is on.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Warning Light – This light signals there is a problem with the AWD system.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Lock Indicator Light – The AWD system is locked.
Electronic Power Steering (EPS) Warning Light – Your EPS system is not functioning properly.
Battery/Charging Warning Light – If your vehicle detects an issue with your battery or alternator, this light will pop on.
Airbag Warning Light – If this light is on and you are involved in a collision, your airbags may not deploy. It could also be a sign that there is an issue with your seatbelts.
Low Fuel Level Warning Light – This light simply lets you know that you need to soon stop and refuel your vehicle.
Immobilizer Indicator Light – If a key isn’t recognized, you will see this light.
Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Light – This light lets you know if your coolant, and in turn, your engine, is overheating.
Icy Road Warning Indicator Light – If the weather conditions could lead to icy roads, you will hear a chime and this light will remain on.
Low Tire Pressure Light / Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Malfunction Indicator Light – If one or more tires are underinflated, or there is an issue with the TPMS system, this light will illuminate.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) OFF Indicator Light – This light tells you that ESC has been deactivated.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Warning Indicator Light – This light goes on when the vehicle is attempting to maintain traction control.
AUTO HOLD Indicator – When this feature, which automatically applies and releases the parking brake in situations such as stop and go traffic, is activated, you will see this dashboard light.
Cruise Control ON Indicator – This light lets you know that cruise control has been engaged.
Master Warning Light – This light is typically accompanied by another warning light. It indicates the detection of one or more warning systems.
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)* ON/OFF Indicator Light – This light turns on or off based on whether or not you are using the LKA feature.
LED Headlamp Warning Indicator – When you turn the ignition switch or the Engine Start/Stop button on or when the LED headlamps are malfunctioning, it could cause this light to turn on.
